What Heater does with your data

Everything Heater records or measures stays on your iPhone. Clips, pitchers, sessions and speeds are kept in the app's own storage on the device. Heater has no account, no sign-in and no advertising, and it does not track you across apps or websites.

Anonymous usage and performance data

To find out how well Heater works and what to improve, the app sends small anonymous records to the developer's server at heaterpitch.com: how long finding the ball took and whether it was found, how many frames you moved each mark, which features were used (such as importing, sharing or backup), and Apple's daily performance and crash reports from iPhones that share analytics with developers. Each record carries a random number made on your iPhone, the app version, the iPhone model and the iOS version. The server also notes the rough area the connection comes from, worked out from its internet address rather than your iPhone's location: the country, the state or region, and in the US the first three digits of the zip code. It never includes your clips, names, photos, notes, places, speeds of a named pitcher, or anything that identifies you, and the random number is not tied to your Apple ID. These records are kept for up to two years.

iCloud backup

Backup is off until you switch it on in Settings. With it on, your clips, pitchers, sessions and speeds are copied to the private part of your own iCloud account, run by Apple, so they sync to your other devices and come back on a new phone. They count against your iCloud storage. Only you can read them; the developer cannot see them. Switch backup off and Heater stops copying; "Delete iCloud copy" in Settings removes what is there.

Camera, microphone and photos

Heater uses the camera to film pitches, the microphone to hear the catch, and the photo library only to import clips you choose. Nothing is sent anywhere as part of measuring a pitch.

Feedback you choose to send

If you contact us, suggest a feature or report a problem from inside the app, Heater sends what you typed, the email address if you give one, the pitch's numbers when the report is about a pitch, the app version and your iPhone model. It includes the clip only when you leave "Include the clip" switched on, and before it is sent Heater removes where the clip was filmed, which a clip imported from Photos would otherwise carry. These go to the app's iCloud database, run by Apple, where only the developer can read them. They are used to answer you and fix problems, and for nothing else, unless you also tick "Also let Heater's AI learn from it".

Clips you let Heater's AI learn from

When you report a problem with a pitch, you can tick a separate box, off until you tick it, to let that clip also train Heater's ball finder. By ticking it you confirm you are the player's parent or guardian. The clip and its marks are kept in the app's iCloud database, seen only by the developer, used only to improve how Heater finds the ball, and never sold or given to anyone else. They stay linked to the identifier Apple makes for Heater, so they can be found and deleted: ask through Contact us or at [email protected], and they are deleted within 30 days. Otherwise they are kept for as long as they help the ball finder, and no longer than three years.

Voting on features

A +1 on a feature is stored in the app's iCloud database with an identifier Apple makes for Heater, which is not your name or Apple ID. It is counted toward that feature and is never shown with anything that identifies you. Tap it again to take it back.

Sharing a video

The Share button makes a video of a pitch and hands it to the iOS share sheet. Where it goes from there is your choice, and Heater keeps no copy beyond the clip already on your phone.

Deleting your data

Delete a pitch, a session or a pitcher inside the app and it is gone, from iCloud too when backup is on. Delete the app and everything it stored on the phone goes with it; a backup in iCloud stays until you delete it from Heater's Settings or from your iCloud storage settings. To have messages, reports or clips you sent deleted, ask through Contact us or at [email protected].
